The 2004 Porsche 911 GT3 RS serves as a homologation model, designed to comply with the new international GT rules and follow the tradition set by models like the Carrera RS 2.7 (1972) and the 911 SC RS (1984). These homologation models not only reflect proud chapters in Porsche’s heritage but have also played significant roles in rewriting motor-sport history.
The 911 GT3 RS, launched in October 2003 as a 996 model, embodies extreme sportiness with the power and purist qualities of a dedicated circuit racer. While legally suitable for road use, it remains an ideal track car, featuring stiffer suspensions and minimal creature comforts compared to the standard 996 GT3.
The 381 hp 3.6-liter engine, shared with the GT3, delivers a pure driving experience, thanks to a lighter flywheel enabling freer revving. With a maximum engine speed of 8,200 rpm and a specific output of 105.8 bhp per liter, the GT3 RS offers a dynamic driving experience.
Although most GT3 RS units were used on the street, the rare Clubsport package, designed for track enthusiasts, includes features such as a full light-alloy roll cage, carbon-fiber hood and rear wing, plastic backlight, fixed-back Recaro racing seats with six-point harnesses, a fire extinguisher, and a single-mass flywheel, enhancing the performance of the 3,746 cc water-cooled engine.
