1983 Porsche 930 TAG-Turbo
From 1984 to 1987, Porsche built a 1.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6, branded as the TAG-Porsche TTE P01, for the McLaren MP4/2 and MP4/3. The engine produced more than 1,000 horsepower in qualifying trim, and 750 hp in race spec. In its first three years on the grid, the engine powered McLaren to two Constructors Championships and three Driver’s Championships. For those who don’t remember, this was the car driven by Niki Lauda during the 1984 season.
The V6 has been extensively rebuilt for usability and longevity with revs limited to 9,000rpm and power detuned to 503hp and 310lb-ft of torque thanks to smaller turbos running low boost. Transmission is a 6-speed manual transaxle with a limited-slip diff with custom ratios which enable the car to hit 200mph top speed. The 930 chassis, suspension and brakes are extensively reworked for handling the extra power. Only 11 cars will be built using the engines acquired by Lanzante from McLaren and each car will have a plaque in the engine bay listing the engine’s race history and the drivers who drove them.
