Porsche Design Group, a subsidiary of Porsche AG, is celebrating half a century of operations. What better way to mark the auspicious occasion than putting its stamp on the German carmaker’s most iconic model – the timeless 911 sports car? Consequently, Porsche will be releasing a limited-edition 911 in special recognition of this significant milestone. The 2022 Porsche 911 Edition 50 Years Porsche Design (not, that’s a mouthful) is based on the existing 911 Targa GTS and will be limited to a run of 750 units.
The technical specifications carry over unchanged from the 911 Targa GTS. That means packed within the car’s frame is a 473 hp, 3.0-liter twin-turbo flat-six engine making 420 lbs-ft of torque. It is good enough for a 3.3-second sprint to 60 mph and 190 mph top speed (when equipped with the Sport Chrono package).
The visual design cues, though, set this limited series sportscar apart. Every example is painted black, a subtle reference to the Porsche Design Chronograph 1, which was the first all-black watch according to Porsche. The colour is complemented by a platinum scheme for the Targa roof bar and wheels. Chronograph 1 references continue on the interior with a red second hand for the dashboard clock. Then, you have the 18-way electronically adjustable black leather seats with checkered fabric inserts known as Pepita. No anniversary car would be complete without embossed logos, and the 911 does not disappoint with distinct badging and a representation of F.A. Porsche’s signature on the center console.
Orders are now open, and each unit will be priced at around $197, 200. Perhaps to take the sting off the hefty price tag, every customer will get an accompanying timepiece with the vehicle purchase. The watch is known as the Chronograph 1–911 50 Years of Porsche Design and will bear an engraved case number on the back to denote its exclusivity.
