Porsche’s Type 956, 962 and 962C is the world’s most successful prototype race car ever produced. Developed specifically for the Group C class that ran between 1982 and 1992, and the IMSA series in the USA, these three versions of essentially the same car, dominated world sports car racing during his period.

While it was the mythical 917 that gave Porsche its first Le Mans 24 Hour victory in 1970, the mighty 12-cylinder racer was only eligible in Europe for two seasons (1970 & 1971). Porsche developed the 917 for the Can-Am series in the USA, which saw the manufacturer introduce the use of turbocharging. Porsche further experimented with turbocharging on the six-cylinder engines (934 & 935) and lessons learned here, proved invaluable in preparing the 956 for the 1982 season. When Porsche wanted to enter the 956 in the American IMSA series, the car was outlawed as the drivers feet sat ahead of the front axle line, a major safety issue for the US racing authorities.

Enter the 962, essentially the same car as the 956, but with the front axle moved forward in the chassis such that the pedal box and the drivers feet were located behind the front axle line. The IMSA required some additional mechanical changes, such as a single turbocharger, but in Europe twi-turbochargers were permitted. There the model was known as the 962C, where it competed in the World Sports-Prototype Championship (WSPC) and the Interseries. Later in the 1980s, the 962C was also dominant in the Supercup Supersprint, and the All-Japan Sports Prototype Championship. When the 956, 962 and 962C finally bowed out of competition in 1994, the result of technical advances by other manufacturers and the fact that Porsche no longer supported this model, it had amassed 232 international victories.
